Theory and Practice: Tape Measure Required

It all feels a million miles away.

In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. But, in practice, there is. – Yogi Berra

The only way to test a theory is to put it into practice. When you go for a test drive, the rubber meets the road and we find out if it works. In my mind the ball goes into the net, only through practice does it actually happen.

This is why Connection Lab is a laboratory – where theory and practice go hand-in-hand— ideas are formulated, experienced, rehearsed, then performed on stage, at the meeting, on the call.

We often get stuck in theory thinking that we have to put theory into practice.

For example, the well researched business strategy document is spectacular – beautiful graphs and diagrams – the strategy meetings articulate the message clearly – but nothing gets implemented. We discuss it so much we forgot that talking about strategy does not put it into practice.

Practice takes time, this is why it feels one million miles away. Practice are the steps to mastery. Mastery is theory in practice.

Several studies show that if you practice three different skill sets at the same time, your proficiency in each gets better and your cognitive abilities increases.

So —

Can I make a list of what I want to practice? And, put whatever you want on that list.

What is my relationship to practice — do I quit when I am not good at something?

(just notice – its not good or bad, just interesting.)

Share your list. Ask others if they will help you practice what’s on your list.

And, what are they trying to get better at?
